Okay actually NYC Prep is actually kind of funny if you are drunk and over the age of 22 and have had a job.

Line: People who attend these events typically are lyike into fashion. and that's why I go, to make *connections*... I was really at this event to meet people in the *business* and not more people my age...

Maybe the designers on my f-list should watch this show to get sum tips D:

(PS: Please, please read this with my usual sarcasm.)

So I'm thinking about getting my hair dyed. Next week I'm going to Aveda for a badly-needed relaxer and hair cut. I'm going for something youthful and chic because honestly I need to start being a girl Or something.

But mostly I'm planning to put big purple streaks into my hair or possibly dye the entire damn thing. Might as well have a rebellion now since I have another year and semester of college left for it. :D

Bravo's newest reality series NYC Prep: Proving that even when presented through the cotton-candy lens of youth, old money is boring and stilted. The noveau riche are the only way to go for quality comedy gold.

Having finished the very enjoyable book, I just washed "Starship Troopers".

Sometimes I kind of hate Lolita. But actually I really love it. I need to get back into wearing it for the sake of wearing it and forget about the whole "community" thing. I think being a moderator/event planner distracted me from the reason why I liked it in the first place. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy both of those roles immensely but after a while I think the online world began to saturate my Lolita world. Anyway, I want to try and wear it a lot next year and really make an effort to do it 100%.

09:26 pm - Tonight Is The Night Of Too Many Posts
So for JHUMUNC 2010 I will be Chair of the Imperial British East Africa Company 1890. (MUN conferences sometimes features historical/retro committees to make things more fun than the usual Security Council, SOCHUM, blah blah blah)

The most important thing about this is what historically-accurate outfits I will be wearing to the committee. Hello, I'm from Planet Lab School and I take MUN way too goddamn seriously.

1890s = Edwardian period, so I was thinking of doing two outfits:

1) A man's business suit w/ frock coat, vest, pants, etc. I can change out the vests for two different looks. (God I need to find some decent pics for this... all I get is Gothy McGothington crap or stuff from 1915, which is a little too updated D:)

2) A Gibson Girl style "suit" for a change of pace, or possibly the awards ceremony.

Since the committee focuses on the day-to-day corporate operation's of the IBEAC I'll need a suit which is formal and speaks of an educated, well-monied gentleman who is herding a bunch of other well-monied gentleman along in a squabbly meeting concerning Her Majesty's holdings in the Sultanate of Zanzibar.

In attendance will be that swishy little Marquess of Lorne so I don't want anything that makes me look *too* fetching D:

Dear LJ,

Help me in my hour of need.

I know there are plenty of you nerds out there who do Harry Potter related stuff. As annoying as I find many things about JK Rowling's series, I have to hand large props to the woman for writing a seven book series that has had such a giant cultural impact.

alsoikindofneedsomethingtodooverthesummerthatisfanwankyshutup.

Anyway, does anyone know some quality, non-stupid RPs for the Potterverse? I am interested in playing with folks who can write well, understand that canon is still important even if you alter some events or use an alternate universe, and generally care about story and plot development over humping and forced character interactions. Most of all I'd like to play an original character rather than one of the canon folk.

I would also like an RP with some accommodation for real life. I don't mind posting a fuckton when I'm free and easy for the summer but come the school year me = busy.

Love,
A.

So I ended up going to the Pride Parade in spite of having a raging sinus attack earlier in the morning. It was amazing and fun and all that.

The only thing that really bothered me was a rather militant political group that marched carrying some antagonistic signs about pro-choice, marriage rights, and that "supporting gay rights means fighting cops". Ironically, about sixteen floats ahead of them there were a bunch of gay cops dancing to Erasure in support of the Gay and Lesbian Chicago Police Officers group.

There are plenty of cops who are douchebags. There are plenty of people who aren't cops and are douchebags. There are plenty of gay/lesbian/trans/queer/whathaveyou folks who are douchebags. The difference is that cops get to wield the strong arm of the law in their efforts to reach Douchebag Nirvana.

But thankfully in society, normal, decent people tend to outweigh the douchebags and that includes cops. Most cops are friendly if somewhat terse people who are tired and stressed out because they get to deal with the same douchebaggery on a grand scale. Cops deal with a lot of stupid shit. And to be honest 90% of the "cop is a douchebag" stories that I hear are people bitching about getting caught for doing something that was illegal and then having to sweat for it. I don't really have a lot of sympathy for the fact that you got a speeding ticket if you were speeding. Or the fact that a cop got non-nonchalant because you had a domestic incident with your life partner about who ate the last of the Cheese Whiz. (And yes, yes, people dial 9-1-1 for the stupidest things all the damn time).

Regardless, what I think people should understand is that corruption is the issue, not the people themselves. If you want a better police force, support extra money to put well-trained, not overworked officers on the street. And while you're at it throw some money into community programs that will give people something else to do besides get on the wrong side of the law. And most of all demand accountability rather than deciding that it's time to whip up a few pink Molotovs to pitch at Officer Friendly.

Anyway, that's just my two cents. I come from a military/cop family so for me the police have never been the enemy. My father, uncles, and cousins all served in the lines of duty and mostly they were just guys who wanted to provide for their families and keep the neighborhood safe.

And now I need to go finish something instead of ranting on the Interbutt because my friend is gonna hurt me if I don't... O___O

Omg Chicago is so amazing that I forgot about Livejournal.

Evidently some idiot decided to put up palm trees on Oak Street beach. I demand to know what yuppie thought that was cute because I want to defenestrate them out of the Hancock Observatory.

I've been taking long walks by the Lake every night. God this city is so beautiful.

Otherwise I've kind of been in a post-school coma. Not ignoring people just sort of like... debriefing my brain after two intense semesters.

Financial aid results are in. I guess someone must have switched around the federal aid requirements because I'm not that much poorer than I was the year before but for some reason I got nearly $6,000 in federal grant money. Last year it was all loans.

Not that I'm complaining. Government loans are easier to pay off than anything on the private market. But the grant money is extra nice because it is FREE. Also I got a scholarship to cover my tuition at school and another one from some alumni fund for being black and smart. THAT'S AWESOME.

I calculated it and I'll probably come out of school with under 30K in debt. That's not very much at all. Thank you powers that be.

In other news PRIDE PARADE tomorrow. Me and the lesbians are running a lemonade stand and we're gonna have a gay ol' time.

Back in Chicago. Very tired. Got my old job back and hopefully 20-25 hours a week doing that. Kind of melancholy because things changed but that's the natural order of things and if they hadn't I'd be creeped out. Need to reconnect with old friends. Need to reconnect with Lolita. Need to finish this frakking policy paper O__O

Also: take a minute to read this. And then consider clicking the Paypal button here. And if you can, consider also making a trip to your local food kitchen, community center, or church to see if they could use an extra set of hands or a spare can of soup. Poverty isn't limited to the homeless anymore and it never has been. Many families are facing the choice between paying for gas to go to work and putting an apple in the lunchboxes for school. I'd like to live in a country where that choice doesn't have to exist. Life shouldn't be easy and you should work for what you have. But things should be just a little easier. Things should be just a little more in range.

The bailout is not going to come from on high for the US. It's going to come from us. The self-reliant thrift and local town hall politics that de Tocqueville admired so much in America will be what saves us. And because we can make our community so much larger and richer nowadays because of technology we can potentially save the world. It might be a simple matter of cutting out your morning coffee and turning over that $1.79 to a micro loan organization at the end of the week. Sometimes it means putting off the hour of television after work to go mentor at your local Boys and Girls Club. Little things, little communities, little efforts will pull up the world around you by its bootstraps.
